How prediction markets work
What are prediction markets?
A prediction market lets participants buy and sell shares in the outcome of a future event. Each market poses a binary question — “Will X happen?” — and resolves to a clear YES or NO on a defined date.
On-chain markets encode every rule in a smart contract. No operator can change the terms, delay resolution, or withhold payouts. The contract resolves automatically from verified real-world data, and winners are paid immediately and trustlessly.
How YES/NO shares and payouts work
You buy shares in either the YES or NO outcome. Shares are priced between $0 and $1, reflecting the market's collective estimate of the probability the event occurs.
If YES shares trade at $0.70, the market implies a 70% chance. If the event happens, each YES share pays exactly $1; if not, each NO share pays $1, and losing shares expire worthless. You can also exit early by selling at the current price — locking in profit or limiting a loss before resolution.
